Francesca Franceschi, about 1851 — The Defranceschi Archive

The family

No family chart is drawn for this person, and that is a statement about the data rather than about them. This archive records kin against a name — the tree on a name page gathers everyone who shares it, so it may hold one person's dates beside another's wife. Rather than hand a reader a family that might not be this person's, the chart is drawn only where the relationship is recorded person by person, which today means the direct line.

What the archive knows

Arrived at the São Paulo immigrants' hostel on 22 May 1888, in a household of five entered on consecutive numbers 100927–100931. The mother is entered as «Mãi», married, nationality «Austria», profession «Agricultor», procedência Santos. No husband is on the page. This entry: Mãi — the head of the party, aged 37. The only Austrian national among the seventy-three Franceschi and De Franceschi in the whole São Paulo register, where the other seventy-two are Italian. Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia were Austrian in 1888, so she carries the nationality this family would have carried — and that, rather than anything in the entry itself, is why she is here. No connection to this family is shown and none is claimed. The party: Giuseppe Franceschi · Fortunato Franceschi · Maria Franceschi · Luigi Franceschi. Ages are as the clerk wrote them, so every year here is estimated to about one either way.
