Households

Not a family tree handed down — a family tree rebuilt. Each of these is a set of siblings who name the same two parents in the index, grouped and de-duplicated across Latin case endings and spelling drift.

How this is built, and where it can be wrong. Each indexed record names its parents. Grouping records by a normalised parent pair recovers the sibling set — but the index writes the same man as Valentino, Valentini and Valentinus, and the same woman as Ursula, Ursulæ and Orsola, so a normaliser collapses Latin case endings and known spelling variants before grouping. Two different men of the same name in the same parish will merge wrongly. Every household here is Inferred and needs the register page to confirm it.
Seven of them no longer are. On 9 September 2026 the Vodnjan marriage register — which no index anywhere contains — was read opening by opening, and it confirmed four of these households from the weddings that made them, naming both sets of parents. It also produced three households the baptism index could never have seen, including one whose husband and wife appear in no register on any film this archive can reach: they exist only because their widowed daughter remarried at forty-nine and the clerk wrote her parents out in full. Those seven carry the reading beneath them. How they were read →
5 of these 148 are on the tree Generations 4, 4, 5, 6, 7 of the direct line are among the households below. The tree shows each of them as the couple it was, with its children, its evidence and its open questions →

Giacomo de Franceschi and Pascasia 7

head born1743–1759 atSvetvinčenat a register read

Five baptisms across seventeen years naming the same couple, and a joint godparent line of 29 April 1753 naming them together; the father dead before November 1771, and the mother remarried on 22 October 1765 as «Pasqua Ved.a q.m Giacomo de Franceschi». The eldest child was moved here from [h113] on 28 September 2026 when his mother's name was re-read. Read on the leaf at images 155, 163, 169 and 179 of the 1709–1764 volume, each magnified. The eldest child's forename could not be recovered — the leaf is flagged razlivena tinta, run ink, and would not resolve even at full plate scale; the parents were legible and the given name was not. It is carried here as a child without a name rather than dropped, because the act exists and the household is one child larger than its names suggest. Two things about this couple are unresolved and are not smoothed over here. Godmothers styled «uxor Jacobi Defranceschi» are read as Veneranda in 1754, 1755 and 1756, while these four baptisms give the mother as Pascasia — so either two Giacomos ran at once or one of the readings is wrong; neither has been magnified. And on 12 May 1754 a godfather is «Jacobus filius Jacobi Defranceschi», an adult son of a Giacomo nine months after Giacomo Battista was born. Two generations of the forename existed before 1754, which is why the groom of 1772 is not merged with the child of 1753. 23 September 2026 — this household begins four years earlier than recorded, and its husband is now distinguishable from the parish's other Giacomo. 31 March 1746: «Martina Antonia filia legitima Jacobi Defranceschi, et Pascasia ejus legitima uxoris amborum ex hac Parochia, nata 28 currentis», godfather D.nus Martinus Peispach ex Dignano — Martina Antonia di Jacobo Defranceschi 1746, read on image 143 and magnified. Pascasia is now attested as a mother in a full parental entry, which matters because the other Giacomo's wife, Francisca Marcario, is attested the same way in 1743 ([h113]). Two baptisms, two mothers, one forename, three years apart — and their godparental appearances interleave across the same years rather than succeeding one another, seven days apart in the winter of 1743. Two contemporary men, not one who remarried. (doc for the act; the separation is inf.) A second child, and a name repeated. 27 October 1747: «Antonia filia legitima Jacobi Defranceschi, et Pascasia ejus legitima uxoris amborum ex hac Parochia, nata die 20 currentis» — Antonia di Jacobo Defranceschi 1747, godparents D.us Joannes Baptista Legiani and D.us Faustinus, son of the chancellor Francesco Saverio Profumo. ⚠ Nineteen months after Martina Antonia, and the name is the same. A parish does not give one living daughter's name to the next. The elder almost certainly died in infancy. The burial register for these years has not been read. (doc for both baptisms; the death is inf, on the naming alone.) 27 September 2026 — the child of 25 March 1750 has her name. «Victoria filia legitima Jacobi Defranceschi, ac Pascasia ejus legitima uxoris, amborum ex hac Parochia, nata hodie», godparents Paulus Venier and Euphemia uxor Natalis Zanzevin — Victoria di Jacobo Defranceschi (1750). This household has carried her since long before as «[forename not read]», the date right and the word missing. The plate supplies it, and nothing new was invented to do so. And Pascasia's marriage is now proved the way Jacoba's is. 29 April 1753: «patrini fuerunt, Jacobus Defranceschi, et Pascasia ejus uxor» — the two of them in one phrase. Which convicts the two entries calling her «uxor Caspari» in December 1751 and February 1752 as the clerk writing the wrong husband, twice, for one woman. 28 September 2026 — this household begins in 1743, not 1746. The baptism of Casparus, 1 June 1743, was filed under [h113] because his mother was read as «Francisca». She is Pascasia — proved against the same clerk's «Franciscus» on the facing leaf and his own «Pascasia» on image 143. See /corrections/. Casparus is this household's eldest child, and the run is 1743–1759, six children over sixteen years.

The book lists sons first, then daughters, so the dates do not run in order. ⚠ Two dates inside this archive disagree on this page — his death (1 or 14 September 1846) and Regina Theresia's birth (1830 or 1836) — and neither is resolvable from the photocopy held. ⚠ Francisca, born 3 February 1819, who came out of «Parochia Gallignana sub N.ᵒ 5» to Gologorica in 1840, is NOT among these children: they begin in 1823 and the marriage is 1819, so she belongs to the generation before.

Generation 5 of the direct line. Five children, and the Pfullingen foreigners' list of 1939–45 names four of them in one town. The household is on the Arolsen cards, on the Reutlingen and Neuhausen residence lists, and in David's tree, which agree with each other. Built from David's own family tree, read on 15 and 16 September 2026, and from the documents this archive already holds for the same people — the Arolsen displaced-persons file, the General M B Stewart manifest and the National Archives of Australia. No parish register has been read for any of these households. They are here because a family that is alive to be asked is a source, and because the archive was printing «no family is drawn for this name» under a man whose parents it had just named in prose.

Both magnified. Antonio is the parish campanaro — the bell-ringer — which is why his name fills the witness lines of the 1770s. Vittorio is placed here on a burial, not a baptism: buried 8 November 1812 aged 54, kin: Antonio, and called «Victorius filius Antonii de Franceschi» in the register in 1773, 1782 and 1787. Maria has no baptism in this volume at all — she is here because two entries call her «Maria filia Antonii de Franceschi ex hac Parochia» (1786, 1787). Her birth is therefore undated, and frames 5–60 covering 1764–1775 do not contain it.

Jacoba is his wife five times over: as a parent here, and as a godmother on 29 December 1739, 16 February 1742, 29 June 1743 and 3 May 1744, each time «uxor Petri Defranceschi» — the last of them read on image 137 and magnified. Six years of one marriage, in a parish where the register gives Jacobo three wives in eight days. That contrast is the point: the clerk is not careless, and where he repeats a pairing he means it. The second child is inferred, not read as his. On 4 October 1739 the register baptises Euphemia, «a Batta Defranceschi et Jacoba ejus legitima uxore» — the same mother's name, the same daughter's name, fourteen months later, and a different father's forename. Three entries put Jacoba with Pietro and one puts her with a Batta, and the Batta entry sits between two of them. The likeliest reading is that the first Euphemia died and the name was given again, and that the clerk wrote the wrong husband. (doc for Anna Euphemia; inf for Euphemia, and the entry has not been altered — it still reads Batta under magnification.) A third child, and the one that makes this a household rather than an episode. 14 February 1745: «Valentinus filius legitimus Petri Defranceschi, et Jacoba ejus legitima uxoris, ambobus ex hac Parochia, natus die 11 currentis» — godfather Antonius Valentinus Colovri ex Cargno, who gives the boy his name. Valentino di Pietro Defranceschi 1745. (doc.) Seven years of Pietro and Jacoba, 1738 to 1745, across two baptisms of their own and five godparent lines. A fourth child, and the entry that removes every remaining doubt about this couple. 10 February 1746: «Victoria filia Petri Defranceschi, et Jacoba ejus legitima uxoris amborum ex hac Parochia, nata die 1mo currentis» — Victoria di Pietro Defranceschi 1746, godfather Joannes Clozo faber. And four months earlier the two of them stand at a font together. 10 October 1745: «patrini ad Sacrum Fontem fuerunt, Petrus Defranceschi, et Jacoba ejus uxor» — husband and wife named in one line, in one hand, with no room for the clerk to attach her to the wrong man. Eight years, four children and seven joint appearances. (doc.) And once more, 22 May 1746: «Patrini fuerunt ad Sacrum Fontem, Natalis Zanzevin, ac Jacoba uxor Petri Defranceschi» — her seventh appearance in that formula, over eight years, always with the same husband. (doc.) Three more, and they run past the last child. «Jacoba uxor Petri Defranceschi» stands godmother on 13 December 1746 (image 145), 3 May 1747 (image 146) and 9 October 1747 (image 147) — her eighth, ninth and tenth appearances in that formula. Ten times across ten years, one husband, never another. (doc.) A fifth child, and a name used for the third time. 17 September 1749: «Euphemia filia Petri Defranceschi, et Jacoba ejus legitima uxoris, amborum ex hac Parochia, nata hodie» — Euphemia di Pietro Defranceschi 1749, baptised the day she was born, godfather Faustino, son of the late Joannes Baptista Defranceschi. ⚠ Anna Euphemia (1738), Euphemia (1739), Euphemia (1749). A parish does not give one living daughter's name to two of her sisters. The first two almost certainly died small. The burial register has not been read. (doc for the baptisms; inf for the deaths.)

Both parents named in full on both baptisms, and the wife named again as a godmother between them. A fifth daughter, Fusca, is added from her marriage of 17 November 1773 — «Fusca filia q. Mathiæ de Franceschi» — tied to this household by the witness Mathias Santalezza, the surname Helena married into in 1766. No baptism of hers has been found. Eleven years of one household, entirely inside the stretch the index does not cover. · 27 August 1741 — «Francisca uxor Matthei Defranceschi» stands godmother, which is the couple's earliest appearance. · 10 August 1742 — «natam die 5 currentis a Matthæo Defranceschi, et Francisca ejus legitima uxore ambobus ex hac Parochia, cui positum fuit nomen Helena», godparent Martinus Stancovich. · 15 February 1752 — «Irena filia legitima Matthæi Defranceschi, et Francisca ejus legitimæ uxoris ambo ex hac Parochia, nata die 11 currentis», godparents Zorzi (?) Lanich and Maria, wife of Joannes Valentich. Both parents are «of this parish» on both acts, so neither is an incomer. doc. A middle child, and it closes the gap. 28 October 1745: «Maria filia Matthæi Defranceschi, et Francisca ejus legitima uxoris amborum ex hac Parochia, nata die 15 currentis», godparents Dominicus Diasich ex Dignano and Elena uxor Joanis Filipich ex Fasano — both from outside the parish. Maria di Matteo Defranceschi 1745. Matteo himself stands godfather three weeks later, on 17 November 1745. (doc.) A fourth child. 21 September 1749: «Victoria filia Matthei Defranceschi, et Francisca ejus legitima uxoris, amborum ex hac Parochia, nata die 19 currentis» — Victoria di Matteo Defranceschi 1749. Francesca is named his wife again on 21 January 1748, and Matteo stands godfather on 14 March 1748 and 25 September 1749. Eight years of one household, unbroken. (doc.)

Both parents named in their daughter's marriage, 27 July 1833; Giuseppe's death found, 14 February 1830. The household this archive circled for two days before it opened. Giuseppe De Franceschi q.m Pietro died at house 324 on 14 February 1830, aged 72 — so born about 1758 — of an organic defect of the chest, and «senza assistenza spirituale per morte improvvisa», suddenly and without a priest. His wife Lucia Tromba q.m Cristoforo shares a surname with Giovanni Tromba, the parson who signs every page of these books and who licensed her son Don Stefano to baptise in 1816 and to marry couples in 1833. Four children: a priest, a ploughman, a weaver and a sister. The two who worked with their hands signed the register with a cross.

Four baptisms, 1858–1865. The index spells the mother Mathaea Delcarro twice and Mathea Delcaro twice; the father is Dominicus Defranceschi in all four. The eldest son is Pietro, the second Stefano, and the fourth is called Venerius — a boy given the feminine family name Veniera in its masculine form. Naming that hard is a household keeping a line in view. This Domenico is plausibly the Domenico Giovanni Antonio baptised 1819 to Stefano De Franceschi and Bonetta Vellico of house 325, married about 1857 — inf, on the strength of the name, the parish and the arithmetic, and nothing more.

Both parents named in full on the baptism, both «of this parish». A household that existed only behind a loose piece of paper. «Die 13 Junij, 1745. Antonia filia Victorij Defranceschi, et Dominica ejus legitima Uxoris amborum ex hac Parochia, nata die 12 currentis, baptizata fuit a R.do D.no Antonio Stancovich Canc.: Patrini fuerunt, Vincentius Bracovich, et Elena vidua defuncti Blasij Marsoni.» On image 140 this page is covered by a slip — an Italian memorandum recording the baptism of the castle chancellor's own daughter, with Paolo Manzini, Captain of this Castle, at the font. Image 141 is the same opening photographed again with the slip lifted. The register's duplicate frames are not redundancy; they are the only way some entries are visible at all. The father is Vittorio Defranceschi Godfather 1744, who stands godfather to a foundling on 5 June 1744 — not the Vittorio born about 1758 who witnesses from 1773 and whom this archive has long carried. A man with a baptised child in 1745 is not a man born in 1758. The later Vittorio is very probably his grandson. (doc for the act; the two Vittorios are inf but not close.) The godmother ties the household to Pietro's. Blasius Marsoni, smith, was godfather to Anna Euphemia di Pietro Defranceschi on 27 July 1738; by June 1745 he is dead and his widow Elena stands in his place. Twins, three years later. «Die 10. Februarij, 1748. Lucia, et Dominicus filii gemini Victorij Defranceschi, et Dominica ejus legitima uxoris, amborum ex hac Parochia, nati nocte elapsa» — Lucia di Vittorio Defranceschi, twin 1748 and Dominico di Vittorio Defranceschi, twin 1748, each given its own pair of godparents, hers Joannes Baptista Miceij ex Castro and Michaelis Valentich, his D.us Jacobus Zuecha, surgeon, and Joannes Jedreicich. (doc.) And on 25 April 1748 Vittorio stands at a font beside Jacoba, Pietro's wife — «Patrini ad Sacrum Fontem fuerunt Victorio Defranceschi, et Jacoba uxor Petri Defranceschi». Two households of the name, one godparent line. A fourth child, and a third slip. 4 October 1749: «Maria filia Victorij Defranceschi, et Dominica ejus legitima uxoris, amborum ex hac Parochia, nata die 3 currentis» — Maria di Vittorio Defranceschi (1749), godfather Joannes Fiorasso. A loose slip lies across the tail of the godparent line; the parental line is clear. The household runs 1745 to 1749.

The daughters' households

38 households where a Defranceschi woman is the mother. This is the half of the family the surname loses.

This section showed eight of them until 22 September 2026. Eight were built on purpose, by sweeping 33 in-law surnames through the index and keeping only records that name our family. The other twenty-seven arrived through the ordinary baptism sweep and were never re-read: they sat among the households of the name, counted as though the surname had carried on through them. A household belongs here whenever the mother carries the name and the father does not, and that is now decided by the data rather than by which sweep found it. Three more were listing the wife in the father's slot. What was wrong →

Treat it as a household-shaped lead. This may be the same household as Michaela Defranceschi × Paschalis Zanghirella (1855–1859, 2 children). The surnames match once the indexer's spellings are set aside, and the years all but touch. They are kept apart because the given names differ, and merging two households on a surname is how one family becomes a fiction. The register would settle it in a line.

Vincentius Sestan, cives, born 25 March 1780; his wife Maria, born a DEPRATO, born 9 January 1786. Their son Antonius married Joanna née Defranceschi in 1843. This archive had written that the death book's index, stacking «Deprato Leonardus» and «Sestan Vincent» at house 6, showed «no family connection at all». These two lines show the connection is two marriages deep — Deprato → Sestan → Defranceschi — and the claim was withdrawn. ⚠ That Maria was Leonardus Deprato's daughter is not established; she is the right age for it and no document read here says so.

These come from sweeping 33 in-law surnames through the index and keeping only records that name our family — 209 of them. Francesca Defranceschi and Giovanni Bergamo had seven children between 1831 and 1846. Jacoba Defranceschi married a Johannes Baptista Crosilla — the Crosilla being one of the leading houses of Mione — and their children are recorded in 1831 and 1833; she was buried as his wife in 1882. Two more daughters married a Moscarda and a Tamborin at Fažana within a year of each other.

One or two children

57 households — the largest group on this page, and the weakest. A pair of siblings naming the same parents is the thinnest thing this method will call a household.

These were built and then shown nowhere. Until now the page rendered four-or-more, exactly-three, and the daughters' households — and everything with one or two children fell through the gap between those buckets. They were counted in every total at the top of this page while being impossible to read. That is fixed here rather than by quietly dropping them from the counts: they are real groupings from real records, and a reader is owed the chance to judge how thin they are.

Named together in both sons' marriage entries, 1821 and 1832. Pietro, born about 1776, of house 312; his first wife Veniera Francin q.m Dom.co de Rondel was dead by March 1818, when he remarried the widow Lorenza Tesser. The two sons' marriages name the couple identically nine years apart, which is what makes them one household. Pietro's father was the Gio. Maria De Franceschi who married Michiela Zambaletta.

Two baptisms, 1858 and 1860. A Stefano De Franceschi with a wife called Maria Forlanichio, whose two sons are Giovanni Maria and Pietro — the two names that run down the Vodnjan male line. A second Stefano is having children in the same parish in the same years by a Maria Francin. Either one man buried a wife and married again, or there are two Stefani. The index cannot tell them apart, and neither can this archive yet — the marriage register for the 1850s would settle it.

One baptism, read on the page. The household is documented; its extent is not. Found by reading, not by searching — film 005497925, image 150, 20 September 2026, during a frame-by-frame sweep of the 1746–1750 gap. This is the second Defranceschi household at Fiume, beside Valentino the Carnian's, and this archive did not know it existed. Only one child is known, because only one page has been read. Magdalena was dead by December 1771, when Joannes Baptista remarries as a widower to Catharina de Benzoni; he has indexed children by her in 1773 and 1776. No marriage of his stands in the Fiume register between 1736 and 1748, all of which has been read — so he married elsewhere, and Magdalena's maiden name is the open question. The father named again twenty-five years later, at the son's own appearance as godfather. The index gives «Casparg, of Jacobo De Franceschi and Anzola, 26 December 1737». The register then confirms the descent twice in 1762: «padrini furono Gasparo figlio di M.o Giacomo de Franceschi»* on 1 August and again on 15 December — magnified. Gasparo is twenty-four in 1762, which is exactly what the 1737 baptism predicts. Giacomo therefore married twice: Anzola, who bore Gasparo in 1737, and Pascasia, whose four children run 1750–1759. Gasparo was dead before 30 March 1773, when «Maria relicta q.m Gasparis de Franceschi» remarried. 23 September 2026 — the register gives him a twin. Image 116 of the same volume: «baptizavit duos infantulos geminos natos hodie mane a Jacobo de Franceschi, et Anzola ejus legitima uxore ambobus ex hac Parochia, quibus fuit positum nomen, uni [Gasparo] alteri Antonij». The index's «Casparg» is one of two boys born that morning, and the second is Antonio. The forename this archive could not read off the plate is supplied by the index line already on this row — each source answering the other's gap.

Their marriage found: 10 June 1772, «Giacobus filius Giacobi de Franceschi et Nicolina filia Nicolai Teserati». This is the first household at this parish joined to its own wedding from two read acts rather than an index line. The marriage register has the couple on 10 June 1772; the first child arrives eighteen months later — «Adi 22 Xbre 1773. Pasqua e Vitoria figlia di Giacomo de Franceschi, e di Nicoletta jugali, nata li 16» — and the second on 3 March 1778, «Joannes filius leg[itim]us Jacobi Defranceschi et Nicolae ejus uxoris, natus heri die*». Both magnified. Nicolina and Nicoletta are one woman, the clerk writing the same name two ways.

The wife named in full in the register itself, five times between 1785 and 1791, as «Euphemia uxor Victorii de Franceschi». «Anno Dni 1784 Die 4 Septembris. Maria Matthia filia legitima, ac naturalis Victorii, et Euphemiæ jugalium De Franceschi, nata 3 currentis». Magnified. This act was read past once. The frame-by-frame sweep of the volume missed it; it was recovered by resolving the FamilySearch index entry's own image ark, which pointed back at a frame already read. The marriage had until then rested on that index line alone. Four more children are held out of this household deliberately. The burial register names Vittorio as kin to Antonia (born 1804, died aged 4), Giovanni Pietro (1809), Antonio (1811) and Gioanni Maria (died June 1813). No mother is named in any of them, and twenty years separate them from Maria Matthia. They are Vittorio's children on the register's word; they are not recorded here as Euphemia's, and the volume covering 1792–1803 has not been read.

atSvetvinčenat a register read

No baptism. This household rests entirely on four godparent lines naming a «Francisca / Franca Marcario, uxor Jacobi Defranceschi» — 1 December 1743, 26 March and 17 December 1752, and 6 February 1753. ⚠ This household had one child until 28 September 2026, and he was never hers. It was built on the baptism of Casparus, 1 June 1743, whose mother the archive read as «Francisca». She is Pascasia — the same word the clerk writes on image 143 for [h107]'s mother, stroke for stroke, and sharing two letters with his own «Franciscus» on the facing leaf. Casparus has been moved to [h107], and this household is left with no baptism at all. See /corrections/. What remains is four godparent lines — «[Franca] Mar-/:cario uxor Jacobi Defranceschi» (1 December 1743), «Franca Marcario uxor Jacobi Defranceschi» (26 March 1752), «Francisca uxor Jacobi Defranceschi» (17 December 1752) and the same on 6 February 1753. A godparent line is the weakest object in this volume, and this archive has twice convicted one of naming the wrong husband. The household is kept because the woman is attested four times over ten years, which is not a slip of the pen — but it is a wife without a child, and the page should say so. (inf.)

Linked into lineages

A household is the child of another when a recorded child of the first grew up to be the father named in the second. 6 such links survive the tests; 5 candidates were too ambiguous to draw.

The tests: the normalised given name must match; the man must be male and not have died in childhood; the gap between his own baptism and his first recorded child must fall between 17 and 48 years; the parishes must be compatible; and descent is never drawn across regions on a bare name match. A link is strong only when there is exactly one candidate, the parish is the same, and the generation gap is ordinary. Everything else is probable. None of it is proven — two men of one name in one parish is the ordinary case, not the exception.
