What the archive knows

Consigliere di Serenissima

posjednik; wife Lucrezia

A baptism, not the death this row records. 1:1:XQMM-5PSM is the baptism of Francesco De Franceschi at Omiš on 1 August 1657, mother Orsola. The row carried a death of 1686 at Pola, copied from this archive's own burials data. A man baptised at Omiš in 1657 is not contradicted by a death in 1686, but the act gives no death and the year must not be asserted from it. Read on FamilySearch, 27 September 2026. Church

This is a record, not a family. The index names these people on one page and does not say how they are related — a parent, a spouse and a godparent look identical here. Nothing above has been joined to anything.

These are not one man. This page gathers everyone recorded under the name, which is the archive's rule — so the 4 positions below are 4 different people who happen to share it, and none of them is necessarily the man in the pictures above.

The same name, written another way

This archive holds 9 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Francesco De Franceschi (of Naunina) · Francesco Defranceschi · Francesco de Franceschi (1887–1945) · Francisci Defranceschi · Franciscus Defranceschi · Franciscus Defranceschi (tailor of Kaštelir, 1818–1892) · Franco De Franceschi · Franco Defranceschi · Franz Defranceschi

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…the archive has flagged that «nineteen in 1806 and twenty-six in 1810 are three years apart and cannot both be right». Twenty-two in August 1809 puts him with the nineteen — born about 1787 — and leaves the «twenty-six» of 1810 as the odd reading. Francesco de Franceschi, aged 25, witness on 21 September 1809 — born about 1784, and almost certainly the Francesco the tailor who married Margherita Gortan. This archive already has Francesco de Franceschi, tailor, married to Margherita Gortan at Mione — and has made something of it, because the tailor is the cramar trade that walked into Istria. …one, and the odd reading is the 1810 one. Declared ages in these acts are what a neighbour said on a doorstep, not what a register held — and this is a clean demonstration of how far they can drift. Both brothers could write «Francesco de Franceschi» and «Osvaldo Ant.o de Franceschi», in their own hands, at the foot of the act. A tailor and a carpenter, twenty-four and twenty-two, in a mountain village in 1809, both signing. Their kinswoman Orsola, forty years old, could not sign her own…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
