What the archive knows

On a De Franceschi stone in the Carnian cemeteries, read from the photograph. > FRANCESCO DE FRANCESCHI 1887 – 1945 and LIDUINA CECCONI 1897 – 1977, in raised letters bolted over the older cut inscription of Agostino de Franceschi. Read 29 September 2026 from David's photographs of the Carnian cemeteries — Ovaro, Mione, Muina and Agrons. ⚠ Which of the four cemeteries this stone stands in is not distinguished in the photographs, and is not guessed here. (doc for the inscription.) ⚠ He died in 1945 — the year the war ended in these valleys, and the year the second memorial in this cemetery closes on: «NOVEMBRE 1944 – MAGGIO 1945». The stone gives no month and this archive draws no conclusion from the year alone.

No family is drawn for this name — this archive has not placed it in a household and holds no indexed entry that names it beside anybody else. A record does stand behind it: the 10 below, not joined to any household. The Register is where an index entry would appear if one turned up.
These are not one man. This page gathers everyone recorded under the name, which is the archive's rule — so the 4 positions below are 4 different people who happen to share it.

The same name, written another way

This archive holds 9 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…the archive has flagged that «nineteen in 1806 and twenty-six in 1810 are three years apart and cannot both be right». Twenty-two in August 1809 puts him with the nineteen — born about 1787 — and leaves the «twenty-six» of 1810 as the odd reading. Francesco de Franceschi, aged 25, witness on 21 September 1809 — born about 1784, and almost certainly the Francesco the tailor who married Margherita Gortan. …and it is still worth recording: by 1803 there were enough De Franceschi households at Mione for two of them to marry each other. A fifth trade, and a second tailor Antonio is a sartore. This archive already has Francesco de Franceschi, tailor, married to Margherita Gortan at Mione — and has made something of it, because the tailor is the cramar trade that walked into Istria. Antonio is a second one. Two tailors of this surname in one village in the same decade, and neither…

…one, and the odd reading is the 1810 one. Declared ages in these acts are what a neighbour said on a doorstep, not what a register held — and this is a clean demonstration of how far they can drift. Both brothers could write «Francesco de Franceschi» and «Osvaldo Ant.o de Franceschi», in their own hands, at the foot of the act. A tailor and a carpenter, twenty-four and twenty-two, in a mountain village in 1809, both signing. Their kinswoman Orsola, forty years old, could not sign her own…

And he is not alone: Cavalli's «Della regione litorale Austro-Illirica» of 1845 gives the same sequence independently — Biagio Molino, Tommaso Tommasini, Francesco de Franceschi, Domenico de Lucteriis. A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
