This chart is the direct line and nothing else. Brothers and sisters are not drawn here: this archive records kin against a NAME rather than against a person, so the family on a name page may belong to several different people of that name. Where it is drawn it is read from the direct line, person by person.

What the archive knows

Born 19 June 1842, baptised on the 21st, at house 5 — and found in the strip at the foot of the page that this archive had been cropping off all day. Gologorica baptisms, folio 103 (M01069116): «Joannes Baptista n. 19 huj.», of «Antonius Defranceschi» and «Francisca nata Defranceschi»; godparents «Antonius Sestan ac Joanna Ivich». (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214.)* The pedigree already had 19 June 1842. Verification, not discovery — but this row had an empty note, and the date now has a register behind it. The day was read at magnification, past the edge of the cell. He is the eldest of the six children of this marriage the register has given today: Teresia (1843), Maria (1845), Leonardus (1847–1917), Rosa (1848–1899), Antonia (1849) and Antonius (1855–1913). His godfather Antonius Sestan is the man who married Joanna née Defranceschi the following February — so the two Defranceschi households of this village stood for each other before they were joined. ⚠ He may be the «Joannes Defranceschi» who witnessed a paternity declaration on 30 December 1870. A labourer of house 26 who could not write — «ego cum signo crucis signatus» — declared before the priest that he was the father of the child being baptised, and two men witnessed it: «Joannes Defranceschi» and «Franciscus Palman». (doc for the entry — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01069150, folio 140.) The argument is age and absence. He was twenty-eight; this archive knows no other adult Joannes Defranceschi at Gologorica in 1870. (inf — the register gives no patronymic and no house, and «no other one known» is a reason to suspect, not to assert.) The section tells what the role itself means.
