What the archive knows

Flagged 16 September 2026, and deliberately not merged. The reconciliation returned this row and the other Petrus Defranceschi mirrored — our 1765 against the tree's 1768 and our 1768 against the tree's 1765 — which usually means one man entered twice. Here it may not. The two rows disagree on the parish: this archive has a Petrus of Rovinj resting on a burial register with an ark against its name, and a Petrus of Gologorica resting on the 2018 family file. Three years and a hundred kilometres apart is two men or one badly recorded; a burial entry outranks a tree entry, and until the Gologorica register is read the two stand separately with this note on each. This man is on the roster twice, from two sources, with the birth years swapped. One row carries 1768 and the other 1765; the tree mirrors them the other way round. They are almost certainly one man — the same death year, 1829 — recorded once from a burial and once from the tree, at Gologorica and at Rovinj. The roster is record-level by design, so both rows stand until somebody resolves them; this note is the flag that they need it. (20 Sept 2026.)

Documented 30 September 2026; he had been carried on the family tree alone. The 1826 status animarum of Gologorica enters him as «Petrus Defranceschi», condition civilitas — of the civil class, not rusticus — born 17 April 1768, in a household struck through. His death is given as the bare year 1829 with the age 61, and no day or month. The arithmetic holds: he turned 61 in the April of that year. ⚠ This is NOT the Petrus Defranceschi of Rovinj. The roster carries a second man of the name also dying in 1829 — petrus-defranceschi-1765, born 1765, from a Rovinj burial record. The two are kept apart deliberately: different birth years, different parishes, and a shared death year is not evidence of identity. The 1765 reading was mine and was wrong on first sight — at magnification the register says 1768, which is also what the age at death requires. (doc.) Gologorica Status Animarum 1826, DAPA microfilm ZM34K-214, image M01069325. His household, from the page after his own entry (M01069326): he married 21 January 1795, and the book gives his wife as «Anna Mater nata Bembo», born 5 July 1779, with one son, Hermenegildus, born 4 October 1803. A brace in the margin against the wife and son reads «In partibus Venetias … habitant» — they live in the Venetian parts, not at Gologorica. --- ⭐⭐⭐ 11 October 2026 — HIS BAPTISM, and the day matches the day. > 17 Aprilis 1768 · «Archipresbyter et Parochus Cerovglienensis Dominicus Clinzich baptizavit PETRUM ANTONIUM filium legitimum D.ⁿⁱ Josephi, et Helenæ jugalium DEFRANCESCHI; patrini fuerunt Josephus Belch, et Matthia uxor Jacobi Rovis q.ᵐ Matthæi, ambo Pisinenses.» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068923, «Liber Baptizatorum II».) The 1826 census and the 1768 register are fifty-eight years apart and give the same date. This row had one sentence of evidence behind it; it now has a baptism written at the time.

⭐ And the 1826 entry's «civilitas» was already true at the font. An outside archpriest, two townspeople from the district capital, a father styled «Dominus». That is the same conditio the Gračišće register gives these people — not «rusticus». ✔ And his officiant is confirmed from another parish's book. A loose slip lying inside this same register — a Cerovlje extract certified in 1793 — has «a me Archipræsbitero et Parocho Dominico Clinzich» signing at Cerovlje on 5 January 1767, fifteen months before he came to Gologorica for this baptism. Two documents, two parishes, one man.

No family is drawn for this name. The archive holds 1 household under it, and its dates do not fit this person: Leonardus Defranceschi × Maria Udovicic (Defranceschi) (1889). A shared forename is not a family.
The same name, written another way

This archive holds 12 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…against 1622) and say one side has the wrong man. Three dispute the death year — Clementina Maria by thirty years, Josephus Lambertus by twenty-one, Lina by two — and say this needs the burial register, not a judgement. And the mirrored Petrus Defranceschi pair says it is one man on the roster twice, 1768 and 1765, same death year 1829. A first attempt put these notes on 56 rows instead of 14, because it matched on name alone and this roster is record-level: Maria Defranceschi is twenty-four…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
