The family

No family chart is drawn for this person, and that is a statement about the data rather than about them. This archive records kin against a name — the tree on a name page gathers everyone who shares it, so it may hold one person's dates beside another's wife. Rather than hand a reader a family that might not be this person's, the chart is drawn only where the relationship is recorded person by person, which today means the direct line.

What the archive knows

The whole of this row was the word «Dominus». A title somebody wrote down, with a birth year and a death year off a family tree and no document behind either. He now has a daughter, from a register. > 20. · Margarita figlia q. Sig.ʳ Giuseppe Defranceschi, N.º 36 — 1783 (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01069209: the Gologorica obit calendar, under 20 April.) Margarita died on 22 April 1783 — the calendar's 20th is two days out. ⚠⚠ CORRECTED 11 Oct 2026 — the register buries him at the END OF 1787, aged 64; «1782» is withdrawn. Her father outlived her by four and a half years, so the calendar's «q.» was wrong and the reasoning that once rested on it is withdrawn with it. ⚠ inf, and the objection travels with it. The entry names a Giuseppe Defranceschi dead before April 1783 and gives no age, no house for him and no other mark. ⚠⚠ CORRECTED 11 Oct 2026 — the register buries him at the END OF 1787, aged 64; «1782» is withdrawn. The «q.» was a copyist's word and the whole of that argument falls with it. The two tree rows now carry one documented man's years and the adjudication is on the worklist. ⭐ And it places him at house 36 by his daughter, which is the house of Joannes Baptista and Catharina and of Sancta the spinster — ⚠ the entry gives the house against Margarita, not against him, and nothing further is claimed. ⚠ His own death is not documented. The obit calendar is the book that would do it and only ten of its nineteen openings have been read. --- ⭐ And a SECOND daughter, found the same evening. > «patrini fuerunt Rev.ᵈᵒ D. Mathias Baxa, Canonicus Titularis Cathedralis Eccl. Petinensis, et Marianna filia Domini Josephi Defranceschi» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068965, Gologorica baptisms, 2 July 1780.)* Marianna stands godmother on 2 July 1780, beside a titular canon of Pedena cathedral. So this row — which was the single word «Dominus» this morning — now has two daughters, Margarita and Marianna, both inf on the same argument and both named «filia … Josephi Defranceschi» in the register. --- ⚠ 10 October — a contemporary register does not call him dead in April 1783, and the tree does. > «Margaretta … filia Josephi et Hellenæ jugalium de Franceschi» — 22 April 1783 (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068991, «Liber Mortuorum II», 22 April 1783.)* No «quondam». Where the obit calendar, written in 1800, has «figlia q. Sig.ʳ Giuseppe» — and her father's row carried d. 1782 off a family tree. ⚠⚠ CORRECTED 11 Oct 2026 — the register buries him at the END OF 1787, aged 64; «1782» is withdrawn. ⚠ A scribe in April 1783 would normally mark a dead father, and this one did not. ✔✔ That doubt is now settled: the register buries him at the end of 1787. The reason to doubt the 1782, not a reason to move it: the archive has no document for his death at all, and an omitted «q.» is a thinner thing than a date. Recorded as the second figure on this row to rest on a tree and nothing else. ⭐ And his daughter's burial places the household's tomb. Margaretta was laid «in Arca Parentuum» — in her parents' chest-tomb inside the parish church. Nine years earlier the župan's widow at house 46 was buried «in Arca ejusdem existente in hac Parochiali Ecclesia», and the 1770 list makes Josephus the successor at house 46. ⚠ Whether it is the same arca is not stated and is not claimed. --- ⚠⚠ 10 October, later — the 1782 is now the most exposed figure on this row. His daughter's death of 22 April 1783 exists TWICE in the register: once in the men's sequence, struck through as a misplacement, and once among the women. Both writings call her «filia Josephi et Hellenæ JUGALIUM de Franceschi» — neither says «quondam». And he is in no death sequence for 1782 — not the men's, not the women's, and not the obit calendar, which covers 1646–1806. > Three death books, and none of them buries him in 1782. ⚠ The year is not changed. An omitted «q.» *is thin, scribes drop it, and eight deaths in some of these years is a low count for a hundred and thirty houses. But the figure now rests on a family tree against the silence of every register that should hold it, and one entry written twice that treats him as living. --- ⭐⭐ 10 October, later — a THIRD daughter, and his marriage documented fourteen years before anything else. > 26 February 1769 · «Maria filia legitima Josephi et Annæ jugalium Flegar baptizata fuit a me Marco Bancich … patrini fuerunt Dominus Josephus Defranceschi et ROSALIA EJUSDEM FILIA.» > 16 March 1769 · «Catharina filia legitima Stanislai et Dominicæ jugalium Crismanich … patrini fuerunt Dominus Josephus Defranceschi, et HELENA UXOR EJUSDEM.» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068925, «Liber Baptizatorum II» 1764–1788 — a book this archive had never opened.) Three weeks apart, in a book this archive had never opened:
26 Feb 1769he stands godfather with Rosalia, his daughter — a row that was a name and a place
16 Mar 1769he stands with Helena, his wife
So Josephus and Helena are a documented married couple in March 1769 — where this archive had them joined only by their daughter's death entry of 1783 and her own burial as his widow in 1804. ⭐ And he now has three daughters: Rosalia (godmother 1769), Margarita (d. 1783, b. c. 1760), Marianna (godmother 1780). This row was the word «Dominus» two days ago. --- ⭐⭐ And a SON, named as his in 1772 — so this household is now four children deep. > 20 February 1772 · «[Mat]hia filia legitima jugalium Leonardi et Catharinæ Deprato[—] baptizata est a me Marco Bancich Parocho hujus Loci; patrini fuerunt D.ⁿᵘˢ JOANNES BAPTISTA DEFRANCESCHI FILIUS D.ⁿⁱ JOSEPHI, et ROSALIA FILIA EJUSDEM D.ⁿⁱ JOSEPHI.» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068930, «Liber Baptizatorum II», 20 February 1772. Two days ago this row was the single word «Dominus». It now has a wife and four children, every one of them named as his in a register.** --- ⭐⭐ And his daughter married a lord of Castel Roč. > Die 20 Junij · «Antonius Aloysius Nicolò natus die 12 Junij, filius legitimus Domini Joannis Andreæ Nicolò DE CASTRO ROZZI, et MARIANNA ejus uxoris, FILIA DOMINI JOSEPHI DEFRANCESCHI, baptizatus est a R.ᵐᵒ D.ⁿᵒ MATHIA DEFRANCESCHI, Canonico TITULARI Cathedralis Ecclesiæ PETINENSIS, de licentia Parochi … R.ᵐᵘˢ Marcus Bancich Archipresbyteri; patrini fuerunt D.ⁿᵘˢ Joannes Baptista Defranceschi, et Maria uxor D.ⁿⁱ Antonij Covaz Pisinensis.» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068940, «Liber Baptizatorum II», 20 June 1781.)* Marianna is «uxor Domini Joannis Andreæ Nicolò de Castro Rozzi» — of the castle of Roč. And her son was baptised by a Defranceschi canon of Pedena cathedral, with her brother Joannes Baptista standing godfather. This row was the single word «Dominus» three days ago. It is now a household with a wife, four children, a daughter married into a castle family, and a canon in the kin. --- ⭐⭐ 11 October 2026 — four years and two months earlier than anything else on this row. > 16 Decembris 1764 · «baptizavi Luciam filiam legitimam Supani Martini et Mariæ jugalium Udovcich Gospood; patrini fuere D.ⁿᵘˢ Joseph Defranceschi et Lucia uxor defuncti Lucæ Dujanich ex Novaco» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068919, «Liber Baptizatorum II», in the hand of Marcus Bancich.) His earliest appearance until now was 26 February 1769, standing with his daughter Rosalia. This is 16 December 1764 — and the word that was once the whole of this row, «Dominus», is on him here too. He stands for a daughter of the serving župan, eight months after the Defranceschi župan is entered «defuncti». ⭐⭐ And a son, and his wife named two years earlier. > 17 Aprilis 1768 · «baptizavit Petrum Antonium filium legitimum D.ⁿⁱ Josephi, et Helenæ jugalium Defranceschi» (M01068923) > 11 Martij 1767 · «patrini fuerunt D.ⁿᵘˢ Joannes Petrus Defranceschi et Helena uxor D.ⁿⁱ Josephi Defranceschi» (M01068922) His son is Petrus Antonius, and he is the man the 1826 census enters as «civilitas», born 17 April 1768 — a row that until today had no parents on it. Helena is named as his wife in March 1767, two years before the 1769 entries that call her only «uxor ejusdem». Told in full here. ✔ And Helena beside his son, 18 December 1769 — «D.ⁿᵘˢ Joannes Baptista filius D.ⁿⁱ Josephi Defranceschi, et Helena uxor ejusdem D.ⁿⁱ Josephi» (M01068926). Father, wife and son all named in one clause. ✔ And his two children stand together, twice, for the other branch. 7 March 1775: «Rosalia filia D.ⁿⁱ Josephi Defranceschi» (M01068933). 15 March 1776: «Joannes Baptista Defranceschi, et Rosalia Defranceschi, filia D.ⁿⁱ Josephi Defranceschi» (M01068934) — at the baptism of the «detti Leonardi» daughter. --- ⭐⭐⭐ 11 October 2026 — A TRADE. This row began the week as the single word «Dominus». > 10 Februarij 1779 · «patrini fuerunt Vitus Pavelich, et Helena uxor D.ⁿⁱ Josephi Defranceschi MERCATORIS ex hac Parochia» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068938, «Liber Baptizatorum II».) MERCATOR — a merchant. And the entry is precise: the child's own father is written «Joannis Sherbaz FABRI», a smith, in the same line. It accounts for everything this row had already collected. The «Dominus» on every entry; the archpriest of Cerovlje fetched over to christen his son, with godparents from Pazin; the «civilitas» the 1826 census still gives that son; the «Cives» *the Gračišće register gives these people. ⭐ And it sets him in a trade network, not a household. Leonardus is «TEXTOR EX CARNIA» (1773); his son is «Textor» (1774); Joannes Verzin is «ex Carnia, professionis suæ SARTOR» (1775). Weaver, weaver, tailor, merchant. ⚠ One construction. The standing rule wants a second before a trade is read as settled, and this row says so. ✔ And a fifth child named in this book. 30 March 1782: «Patrini fuerunt Joannes Baptista filius Josephi de Franceschi et Margarita ejusdem filia» (M01068941). His children attested here are now Joannes Baptista, Rosalia, Marianna, Margarita and Petrus Antonius.* ⚠⚠ 11 October 2026 — his death year is now the most exposed figure on this row. Two entries from «Liber Baptizatorum II» put a Josephus Defranceschi alive after the date this row gives: 16 December 1783, standing godfather as «Dominus Josephus Defranceschi»; and 4 October 1787, «Hellena UXOR Josephi de Franceschi» — the register distinguishing uxor from viduus in the same clause. ⚠ No change is made. The family relationships tie Helena, Margarita and Joannes Baptista to one Josephus, so the archive's second Josephus row does not rescue the chronology. It is on the worklist, and a contemporary death entry is what would settle it. --- ⭐⭐⭐ 11 October 2026 — HIS DEATH, AND IT CORRECTS THIS ROW BY FIVE YEARS. > 36 · «Die 30, hora 4.ᵗᵃ Matutina, anno quo supra [1787] · Obijt JOSEPHUS DE FRANCESCHJ, MERCATOR, ætatis suæ annorum 64. Provisus in sua infirmitate omnibus Sacramentis necessariis a R.ᵈᵒ D.ⁿᵒ Can.ᶜᵒ Joanne Martinich. Cujus corpus 31 dicti sepultum est in Cœmeterio extra Locum, per R.ᵐᵘᵐ D.ⁿᵘᵐ Parocum ANICICH Novacci.» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068984, «Liber Mortuorum II», the male sequence.)

The death year is corrected to 1787. The birth stays at 1722 — an implied year is not a declared one — with c. 1723 recorded beside it. ✔✔ And it resolves two things this archive had flagged and could not settle: Helena is «uxor» on 4 October 1787 because he was alive, and the «jugalium» of April 1783 was right — the obit calendar's «q.» *was the copyist's. ⚠⚠ AND IT EXPOSES A DUPLICATE. An undocumented tree row carries «Guiseppe / Josephus / Josip Defranceschi, 1723–1787» — the register's figures exactly. No merge is made here — ids are frozen and every link written this week points at this row — but the adjudication is on the worklist. --- ✔✔ AND THE DUPLICATE IS ADJUDICATED THE SAME DAY — one man, and this row keeps him. The 1782 death this row carried for a year does not exist. The whole of 1782 in the male death sequence was read entry by entry (M01068981): nine men and boys, every one named — Bancich, Deprato, Cinich, Stojsich, Ancich, a servant, Flegar, Udovcich, Crismanich — and not a Defranceschi among them. The obit calendar never produced him either. The undocumented tree row carrying 1723–1787 is marked sameAs this row. Neither id moves. This row has the trade, the wife, the five children, the house and the tomb; it now has the right death year too. ⚠ The birth stays at 1722, and it is the weakest figure on this row. The register's «annorum 64» implies c. 1723 and the joined row says 1723 — but an implied year is not a declared one and the two tree figures are not independent. A baptism entry would end it and nothing else will.
