- Petar Defranceski — 1913, Pfullingen
Ship's engineer with Jugoslav Lloyd at Split; left for Germany in April 1939 and stayed. Married Luise Salzer at Neuhausen in February 1942. Applied in November 1947 to be resettled in California — and then did not go: by July 1949 he had a house and two cars, and in April 1951 confirmed the family would remain in Germany. His wife now has a page. The same camp file holds Luiza Defranceski (geb. Salzer)'s own Fiche Individuelle — born 5 October 1919, ménagère, Kelterstr. 30 Neuhausen, the address on Petar's own card. She is the «Luise Salzer» of the 1942 marriage, under her married name. And her 1948 identity card is the only photograph this archive holds of the two children the IRO letter classified with the family. (inf for the identification.)
This archive holds 13 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
