What the archive knows

Left Yugoslavia about 1954, when his son was three — the family having failed to get out in 1948. He and Hedviga divorced about 1969, which is why he is buried at Senj and she died at Johannesburg. lore — from Cheryl's memoir.

Arms

Generation 7 of the direct line — David's father. Died in 2026. He was absent from this list until then for two reasons, and only one of them was the rule about living people: the roster is filtered to the surname, and the direct line recorded him as «Ivan» with no surname at all, so he was dropped as somebody else's. Born at Senj on 17 December 1951 — the month from Cheryl's memoir, the day from David, 14 September 2026.

These are not one man. This page gathers everyone recorded under the name, which is the archive's rule — so the 3 positions below are 3 different people who happen to share it.

A made family chart, not a register.

Where this comes from

2 of the 2 relationships drawn above are written in a register this archive has read with its own eyes.

3 households were rejected before this chart was drawn, because the dates do not fit a person of this name: Josip De Franceschi × Ana Kalanj (1894) · Anton Rudolf Defranceski × Ursula Kovačina(Defranceschi) (1925) · Ivan Defranceski × Hedviga Blažević (Defranceski) (1951).

Joined on a name alone. One household above could not be date-checked, because this archive holds no year for the person or for the household. Treat that link as a lead.

The same name, written another way

This archive holds 16 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…So the shape is now whole. They tried in 1948 and failed. The son was born at Senj in 1951. They got out about 1954. Six years between the attempt and the crossing, and the child was born into the gap. Two more things follow from the same book. A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
