What the archive knows

Two American naturalisation records give this man an exact birth day and name his birthplace as the origin parish. Declaration of intention 22660, Brooklyn, 1912: «Joseph Defranceschi», born 12 March 1892, birth country Austria, birthplace as transcribed «Gaglinana, Austria». Petition 13838, certificate 1104860, Brooklyn, 1915: the same man and the same birth day, with the birthplace now spelled «Gallignana, Austria» — which is Gračišće, the parish this family comes out of. The clerk spelled it two ways three years apart, and the second is right. (inf for the identification with this row — name, year and parish all agree and no document joins them; doc for the two acts themselves.) Findmypast, «United States Naturalization Petitions» — final petition and citizenship papers, New York, 1865–1958; index © IRI, used by permission of FamilySearch Intl. New York

The record behind this row is a different person in a different century. 1:1:Q2Q4-WNSF is Teresa Defranceschi, born 8 December 1881 at Rivolta d'Adda, Cremona, Lombardia — a woman, ninety-seven years later, five hundred kilometres away. The dates 1784–1819 were copied from this archive's own burials data on a name match. Held pending a decision on whether the row should exist. Read on FamilySearch, 27 September 2026.

Born at Dignano, 1 September 1904, head of a household of five in the Italian IRO files, entered «nationality: Venezia Giulia» — the formula used for the Istrians who left after 1947. He also stands in the IRO files under DANISKA (3.2.1.5). IRO «Care and Maintenance» file, Italy (Arolsen 3.2.1.2) — the paperwork of the esodo, the Istrian exodus of 1947. Arolsen Archives online collections, read 21 September 2026 under the -schi spelling, which this archive had not tried until the service came back up. (doc)

The same name, written another way

This archive holds 11 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Giuseppe De Franceschi · Joseph De Franceschi · Joseph Defranceschi · Josephi Defranceschi · Josephus Aloysius de Franceschi · Josephus Defranceschi · Josephus Defranceschi (Kaštelir, 1870) · Josephus Defranceski · Josip Defranceschi · Josip Defranceski · Joso Defranceski

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…nowhere in the Habsburg interior. The first draft of this archive overstated it; corrected here. Can the households be linked into descent? Partly. One lineage of three generations and five households survives the tests, at Rijeka: Giuseppe Defranceschi and Francesca (children 1772–78); their son Valentinus Franciscus Xaverius, born 22 November 1772, with Ursula (eight children 1794–1805); and three of his sons heading households from 1822. Four further links were too ambiguous to draw. Have all…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
