What the archive knows

Died 19 March 1870 at house 23 of Castellier, aged eight, of angina — «Josephus Defranceschi, sartoris», son of the tailor, which names his father without naming him. Born about 1862. See Franciscus Defranceschi Tailor of Kastelir 1818 1892. (doc for the death and the age; the birth year is arithmetic.) Film 005497821 (Liber Defunctorum, Parochia SS. Cosmae et Damiani, Castellier — Kaštelir), read on the plate 22 September 2026. One of David's own citations, never opened here until now.

No family is drawn for this name — this archive has not placed it in a household and holds no indexed entry that names it beside anybody else. A record does stand behind it: the 6 below, not joined to any household. The Register is where an index entry would appear if one turned up.
The same name, written another way

This archive holds 10 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Giuseppe De Franceschi · Giuseppe Defranceschi · Joseph De Franceschi · Joseph Defranceschi · Josephi Defranceschi · Josephus Defranceschi · Josephus Defranceski · Josip Defranceschi · Josip Defranceski · Joso Defranceski

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…perito nell'arte di muraro» built the marble altar of St Quirinus in the parish church at Visignano in 1736. Set this beside the Gologorica registers and the shape of the family's first century in Istria stops being mysterious. A «Dominus Josephus Defranceschi» stands godparent there through the 1760s and 1770s; a «Sig.r Piero De Franceschi da Gollogorizza» marries a noble Bembo at Valle in 1795. Brhan's article says exactly what that title meant for a Carnian family in Istria in that decade: not old standing,…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
