Sovinjak

Two burials, twenty-four years apart, and both of them a son of a Gio Battista.

The register holds exactly two entries for this parish and they are the whole of what is known. Zuane Franceschi, buried at Sovignacco in 1759, son of Gio Batta Franceschi. Sebastiano De Franceschi, born and buried on 6 August 1783, son of Gio Battista De Franceschi — an infant, dead in the same year he was born.

One small hill parish above Buzet; two sons of a man of that name a quarter of a century apart. It is either a father who buried a child in middle age and another in old age, or it is two generations putting the grandfather's name back into use — which is what this family does in every place where it can be watched long enough to see.

Neither reading can be tested yet. Sovinjak is not one of the forty-three Istrian parishes in the filmed collection this archive has walked, and no register of it has been found on any film reachable from here. The town sits on the Buzet upland with Roč, Hum, Draguč and Šterna — four more parishes carrying the name and three of them equally unfilmed. Until one of those books opens, the household stays a pair of burials and a shared Christian name.

The place was reached not by searching for it but by asking a duller question: which towns in this archive's own register have no entry in this archive's own atlas? Twenty-one did. Sovinjak was one of only five whose rows turned out to carry the family's name at all.

And it is not as isolated as this page assumed. Banić's figures for the Buzet contado name its constituent places outright: Hum and Roč, Sovinjak, Vrh and Draguč, and the villages around Rašpor — with Petrapilosa's feud inside the same count. Sovinjak is not a stray hill parish; it is one village of a district that also contains Šterna, where a Bortolo de Franceschi dalla Cargna married the daughter of a Marchese Gravisi in 1777, and Draguč, which holds none of the name at all. Whether the two sons of a Gio Batta buried here in 1759 and 1783 belong to that Šterna household is not shown by anything — but they are now in the same administrative country rather than in unrelated places. Inferred — shared district, not a shared family
