What the archive knows

She died at two days old, and the register proves it to the hour. > «1821. Die 30ma Januarii hora ½ 4ta a meridie · [domus] 104 · CLEMENTINA FILIA D.ni JOSEPHI DEFRANCESCHI · dierum 2 et horarum 11½ · Imperfecta Structura» > Sepulta fuit die 1ma Februarii 1821. — Ant. Ferdinandus Mocovich, parochus. (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01069259, page 62 of the death register.) Her baptism has her born 28 January 1821 at four in the morning, at the same house 104. From then to half past three on the afternoon of the 30th is two days and eleven and a half hours. The arithmetic closes exactly. The cause is imperfecta structura — imperfect formation. ⭐ This archive inferred her death on 1 October, from nothing but the twenty-month gap before her namesake sister and what families did. The inference was right and it is now a document — and the caution published alongside it was right too: her baptism carries no marginal cross, and a blank margin in that book means nothing. ⚠ The death year of 1870 this row carried is withdrawn. It came off the family tree and it cannot be hers. It does not simply pass to her sister either: the thirty-year dispute over the 1822 Clementina is still open, and it has lost the easiest way of explaining it away.

No family is drawn for this name, and no record stands behind it. This archive has not placed it in a household and holds no indexed entry for it — the name reached this project through a chart, a narrative source or the family tree, and everything it does hold is below. The Register is where a record would appear if one turned up.
Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…on 10 March 1870 closes exactly on the declared birth of 3 October 1822. At 10 March 1840 she would have been seventeen. The tree was right and this archive was wrong. And a second pointer had been sitting on the same row since 5 October: a Clementina Defranceschi stands godmother in 1841 — which a woman dead in 1840 cannot do. Fixed: death 1840 → 1870 on the roster row and on @I40@, re-declared in data/decisions.json in the same commit. The pid keeps 1822 because it…

…tree 1870 — stands, and has merely lost the comfortable explanation that the two dates belonged to two women. One of them is still wrong about a real person, and the death register has not yet reached her. ✔ One thing it does settle. …the tree and the archive disagree about a Clementina's death by thirty years: 1840 here, 1870 there. The archive's working inference has been that the elder died young and the name was reused, which is what families did. A Clementina Defranceschi standing godmother in February 1840, old enough to be chosen and entered as a citizen, is evidence in that argument and it does not settle it. She may be either of them. The burial register — 91 frames on the same reel, 2% read — is what…

…tree 1870 — loses one of its two explanations: it can no longer be settled by saying the 1870 belongs to her sister. Both rows are corrected and the remaining dispute is stated, not resolved. ⭐ And it identifies the godmother of 1840. A Clementina Defranceschi stood godmother at Gologorica on 20 February 1840, entered civis, and this archive wrote that she might be either of the two. She cannot be the elder. There is only one Clementina left. «1817. Die 19 Xbris hora 10ma…

…year by 30 years, and that is the serious kind. … This needs the burial register, not a judgement.» The burial register was the thing walked today, and it answered in one line. A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
