What the archive knows

Aged sixty when he crossed. New York City passenger lists: «Riccardo Defranceschi, age 60, birth year 1889, birth place Italian, arrival year 1949, arrival city New York, ship Atlantico» — NARA publication T715, roll 7738, film 002296450. A man of sixty arriving in 1949 is not an economic migrant, and the year is the middle of the Istrian esodo. The manifest would say where he came from; the index does not — the post-war series records only nationality, and the town is on the plate. (doc for the arrival; everything about his origin is open.) No family is drawn for this name, and no record stands behind it. This archive has not placed it in a household and holds no indexed entry for it — the name reached this project through a chart, a narrative source or the family tree, and everything it does hold is below. The Register is where a record would appear if one turned up.
Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

This person has not been written up in an essay yet — most often read straight off a register page that no index anywhere contains. What is known is at the top, and the pages linked above are where the finding sits.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
