Cosulich
A family that married into this one.
Marietta Cosulich married Emerico De Franceschi at St Peter's, Roath — the Catholic parish of Cardiff — on 26 July 1876, her father Josephi Francisci Cosulich in the priest's genitive. Cosulich is a Lussinpiccolo and Trieste shipowning house, and the masters printed beside De Franceschi in the shipping columns of those years — Bujanovich, Lacovich, Cattarinich — are Lussino names to a man.
- Giuseppe Cosulich, b. 1829, and Giulia, b. 1831, keeping house at St John, Cardiff in the 1881 census — almost certainly the Josephi Francisci of the marriage entry.
- Richiard b. 1860, Teny b. 1863, Enrico b. 1866 — in that same 1881 household, and so most likely Marietta's brothers and sister.
- Emilio b. 1854 and Jesse b. 1864, at St John, Cardiff, in the 1891 census.
- T. S. Cosulich, b. 1844, at St Thomas, Swansea, in the 1871 census — the earliest of them in South Wales.
- Giulio A. b. 1860 and Bridget b. 1877, with Irene, Felix, Doris, Mabel and Bernard, at Barry in the 1921 census.
- Bernard S. Cosulich, b. 1916, in the 1939 Register at Rhyl.
They are why «an old Cardiff family» is true. Searched on 21 September 2026: no person of the Defranceschi surname, in any spelling, is enumerated anywhere in Glamorgan in any census from 1841 to 1921 — and the Cosulich are there in 1871, 1881, 1891, 1921 and 1939. The Cardiff roots in that 1896 newspaper sentence are the bride's, not the groom's.
Marietta herself is in none of them. She married in July 1876 and had left before the 1881 census — the Aquilone cleared the Bute Docks for Guadeloupe seventeen months after the wedding, and a master's wife goes where the ship goes.
The Hungarian Littoral
- Who held it
- Hungarian crown land, not Austrian — a separate legal world with its own ministries, budgets and civil service.
- The registers
- Državni arhiv u Rijeci and the parish books.
- Beyond the registers
- Hungaricana — free, full-text, and the single most under-used source this archive has. State final accounts naming pensioners and their orphans; parliamentary pension schedules with years of service; the National Archives of Hungary plan collection. This is where the office-holders are, and they are in none of the Austrian or Croatian portals.
- Where this archive stands
- Barely begun. Opened for the first time on 13 September 2026.
