Johann (Joannes) Defranceschi, navy servant
Johann (Joannes) Defranceschi, navy servant, 1833. Gračišće (Galignana) → Pola. Every mention of this name in the archive — 1 across 1 page.
⭐⭐ READ ON THE PAGE, 17 October 2026 — a brother of Franciscus Liberatus, in the Austrian navy at Pola. Marriage at Pola, 16 January 1871, k.u.k. naval parish (entry in the Trauungs-Buch 1867–1881, image): «Defranceschi Johann, k.k. Marinediener 4. Cl. [navy servant, 4th class], lawful son of Franz Defranceschi, Besitzer [landowner], and Franziska née Salomon», born at «Galignana in Istrien», Catholic, single, age «34» (the second digit is overwritten; the baptism makes him 37), married Paula Pietra, 19, born at Pola, daughter of Rocco … (a Landmann) and Johanna née Borri. doc for the entry. inf — strong — that he is the Joannes baptised at Gračišće house 5 on 30 June 1833, son of Joan. Bapt. Defranceschi and Francisca Salomon (h116): the mother's name and surname, the village and the surname agree, and his brother Franciscus Liberatus (b. 1840) married at Pula three years earlier with the same parents named. Two points do not agree and are stated, not smoothed: the father is written «Franz» where Gračišće and the 1868 and 1875 Pula entries have Joannes Baptista; and the age is 34, three years under the baptism. The Pula civil marriage books read for 1864–1901 have no marriage of his: he married in the naval parish, which is why the civil read did not find him. Nothing is yet known of Paula or of children; his death is not found.
This archive holds 1 other page under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

This person has not been written up in an essay yet — most often read straight off a register page that no index anywhere contains. What is known is at the top, and the pages linked above are where the finding sits.
A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
