Stephanus Buić (b. 1859 Pomer)
Stephanus Buić (b. 1859 Pomer), 1859. Pomer, Istra. Every mention of this name in the archive — 11 across 5 pages.
Born 29 July 1859, baptised 1 August 1859 at Pomer, house 33, to «Magdalena vidua Tomasi Defranceschi nata Buich»; father «incognito». doc — DGS 005497826, frame 640. Found again as a man: 17 March 1889 and 12 March 1890, «Stephanus Buić, filius Magdalenae De-franceschi», married to Emilia née Košara, house 33, father of Josephus Emilian (b. 13 Mar 1889, died April 1889) and Maria (b. 11 Mar 1890) (frames 681 and 682; doc for the entries, inf for the identification with the 1859 child — same forename, same house, filiation written in the 1890 entry). He bears his mother's maiden surname, not Defranceschi; no father is ever named. Half-brother of Lucia (1844), Michele (1847) and Maria (1852) through their mother. Whether he is the «Stefan Buić» of other entries is not established. Third child on record: «Magdalena Joanna», b. 18 June 1891, house 48 (frame 685); he is then «operarius» (labourer). Written «Buich Stephanus illeg.mus» (illegitimate) in the 1897 baptism of his son Blasius Stephanus (4–5 Feb 1897; DGS 005497826, frame 696, births frame 75, page 52, entry 2; doc) — the register's own statement of what the 1859 entry called «patre incognito»; this closes the identification.
Two children here carry one name — m a g d a l e n a j o a n n a b u i c. In these parishes that is usually not an error: a child who died was very often replaced by a later child given the same name. It is also exactly how an index invents one person out of two, so both are drawn.
9 of the 9 relationships drawn above are written in a register this archive has read with its own eyes.

…children followed her; Lucia stayed, married a Lazaro, bore nine children and buried six of them before they were nine. Their mother Magdalena, a widow from 1858, delivered the village's babies as its midwife, and her son by an unnamed father grew up to be Stephanus Buić and had eight children of his own. And the Pomer registers make one correction to this archive's own record: the mother was never «Magdalena Davić». She is Buich — Buić — in four entries, two hands and three kinds of book. 1816·…

…(births frame 75, register page 52, entry 2), magnified at 1.15×; the father's line reads «Buich / Stephanus / illegitimus». «Illegitimus» after the father's name is the register's own statement that Stephanus Buić was born out of wedlock — the same fact the 1859 entry recorded as «patre incognito». That closes the identification as far as a register can: the Stephanus of 1859 (father unknown, mother Magdalena Defranceschi née Buich, house 33) and the Stephanus of…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
