Sablich / Jablich

A family that married into our own direct line.

«Cath. ejus uxor nata Jablich ex Buccari» — Catharina, his wife, born Jablich, out of Buccari. She is the wife of Joannes Baptista Defranceschi, and the two of them stand godparents together at Gologorica on 3 October 1786, both entered as Cives Gollogoricenses. This archive had no Catharina as the wife of any Joannes Baptista — only two daughters of that name — and the surname Jablich appears nowhere in it at all.

Bakar is not a new place to this archive — it is an old unanswered question. The search register has carried «Bakar's parish registers» as a standing request for weeks, unopened. This is the first person who gives a reason to open them: a woman of Buccari marrying a Defranceschi of Gologorica before 1786, which is a hundred and thirty kilometres and a different sovereignty away from the Istrian interior.

⚠ The surname was first read as Jaklich at page scale. At five times magnification the letter is a b, matching the b of «Buccari» written directly beneath it in the same hand. Jablich.

✔✔ 9 October 2026 — the family's own parish spells it SABLICH, and the proof is internal.

The Bakar marriage of 10 November 1783 names the bride's father «D. Sabastiani Sablich» and the bride «D. Catharinam Sablich». The same scribe writes «Jacobus» and «Josepho» three lines below, both with a long descender below the baseline; the Sablich initial has none — and «Sabastiani» and «Sablich» open with the identical letterform, which in Sebastian can only be an S. ⚠ Gologorica's own register still writes «nata JABLICH ex Buccari», and probably wrote exactly that — two scribes, not two readings. The heading here keeps both forms because the archive met her under the Istrian one.

The Hungarian Littoral

Fiume (Rijeka) · Bakar (Buccari) · the Vinodol — Klenovica, Crikvenica, Ledenice, Novi · Senj
Who held it
Hungarian crown land, not Austrian — a separate legal world with its own ministries, budgets and civil service.
The registers
Državni arhiv u Rijeci and the parish books.
Beyond the registers
Hungaricana — free, full-text, and the single most under-used source this archive has. State final accounts naming pensioners and their orphans; parliamentary pension schedules with years of service; the National Archives of Hungary plan collection. This is where the office-holders are, and they are in none of the Austrian or Croatian portals.
Where this archive stands
Barely begun. Opened for the first time on 13 September 2026.
