Kaštelir

Seventeen records, and — read together with Vižinada and Tar — one family across three parishes.

Kaštelir was for a year the densest thing in Istria this archive could document and could not explain: seventeen records of the name, four of them accepted, a hilltop village kept under Vižinada, and no lane on the branch chart running through it.

Read by image rather than by place text, the three parishes of the Poreč hinterland turn out to hold the same people. Giulio (Julius) De Franceschi × Maria Ceselin — the name is written Ceselin, Sesalin and Cedelini in three different hands — has a son Francesco Napoleone baptised at Vižinada on 7 September 1818, a daughter Catharina baptised at Kaštelir in 1829, and is himself buried at Kaštelir on 19 September 1854, entered as «Giulio Defranceschi, of Mattio». Francesco Napoleone then raises his own family at Kaštelir with Maria Radojković — Aloisia 1859, Josephus 1862, Margarita 1869.

A second household runs alongside it: Angelus Defranceschi × Lucia-Antonia Rodella, whose son Julius is baptised at Kaštelir on 29 January 1866 and buried at Tar on 9 March 1870, aged four. Angelus dies at Tar in 1895.

The join is by name, date and parish adjacency — no single document names two of these places at once — so it is an inference, and is marked as one. But it is the first time the hinterland has read as a family rather than as a scatter.

And it corrects this page's neighbour: Draguč, long counted at twenty-five records, holds none. Its three volumes were fetched and every image tested. The twenty-five were Vižinada's, returned twice by a search parameter that does not filter.
