What the archive knows

Wife of Joannes Baptista Defranceschi, and born a Jablich of Buccari — Bakar, on the Kvarner. The Gologorica baptism register enters the couple as godparents on 3 October 1786: «Joh: Bapt. Defranceschi m.p. · Cath. ejus uxor nata Jablich ex Buccari», both Cives Gollogoricenses. New to this archive in both directions: no Catharina was recorded as the wife of any Joannes Baptista — only two daughters of the name — and Jablich appears nowhere else in this archive. No dates are given for her in this entry. (doc.) Gologorica baptisms 1784–1880, Džavni arhiv u Pazinu microfilm ZM34K-214, image M01069017, entry of 3 October 1786, house 19. Read 30 September 2026. ⭐ 6 October 2026 — AND NOW SHE HAS DATES. > «Petrus Anicich, P[res]b[yte]r Novacensis · [domus] 36 · 21 maii [1792] · CATHARINA DEFRANCESCHI · annorum 26 · Apoplexia» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01069233, pages 11–12 of the Gologorica death register.) She died on 21 May 1792, aged twenty-six, of apoplexy. Born about 1766 — so she was twenty when she stood at that font in 1786 and twenty-six when she was carried out of house 36. ⚠ Ten months before her, the same house buried her daughter. «MARIA ANTONIA DEFRANCESCHI · mens[ium] 6 · Vermes», 16 July 1791. Her husband Joannes Baptista did not remarry: he died a widower in January 1813, twenty-one years later. The sequence is told here. She was buried by Petrus Anicich, priest of Novaki — the same man who signs this parish's visitation as DEAN in 1808. --- ⭐⭐ 9 October 2026 — her marriage is NOT at Gologorica, and the entry that is probably hers has been in this archive for a week. The Gologorica marriage register 1770–1789 was opened and walked this week looking for exactly this. She is not in it — M01068999, M01069002–M01069005, covering 1779–1788, and the unread frames are 1770–79 and 1788–89, when she is a child or long married. ⭐ A bride marries in her own parish, and hers is Bakar. The Bakar household page, published from the FamilySearch indexes, carries: «A separate entry has a «Joannem Defranceschi» marrying «Catharinam SABLICH» — either the same man remarried, or a brother.» «Sablich» · «Jablich». One letter, filed on another page as a Bakar puzzle. And the age arithmetic clears it: that page's Catharina was born 1734 with children baptised 1773 and 1776; this one was seven in 1773. ⚠ Nothing is joined. The index writes «Joannem» where the line above writes «Joanem Bap.»; no date is quoted for the Sablich entry; no register has been read. The test is one film, already waypointed: Bakar marriages 1739–1857, 9R28-82Z. Worklist 166. --- # ⭐⭐⭐ SHE HAS A WEDDING — 10 November 1783, at Bakar, in her father's house > «Die 10 9bris pro domo D. Sebastiani Sablich, Nuptiis in facie Ecclesiæ contractis inter D.ⁿᵘᵐ Joannem Bap.[tistam] [De]franceschi ex GOLLOGORIZZA et D. Catharinam Sablich, tradidit D. Parochus Buccarensis Jacobus Polian, præsentibus Senatore D. Josepho Walis et D. Index 1:1:6Z2F-LSSQ; image 3:1:3QSQ-G99X-RX3F.)* Born about 1766, she is seventeen. Her first known child died at eleven days in March 1786, twenty-eight months later.

⭐ And it is not a join made by matching names. The Gologorica marriage register was walked first and gave a clean nil — M01069003 was read entry by entry and covers November 1782 to January 1785. 10 November 1783 falls inside it and there is no Defranceschi marriage on it. He was not at Gologorica that day. ⚠ HER SURNAME IS CONTESTED AND THIS ARCHIVE IS NOT PICKING A WINNER. Gologorica writes «nata JABLICH ex Buccari»; Bakar — her own parish — writes «SABLICH» twice, for her and her father. The home parish ought to win, but a long ſ and a J are a classic confusion and this archive has been wrong about single letters in both directions today. She is recorded as Catharina née Sablich / Jablich until the Bakar scribe's own S and J are compared on page 161. The person id stays frozen — a moved id is a dead URL. ⚠ And this corrects the Bakar page, which read the same entry from the index as «either the same man remarried, or a brother». He is neither. --- # ✔✔ SETTLED, the same evening — SABLICH, and the proof is inside her father's forename This row said neither spelling was declared correct and named the test: find the Bakar scribe writing an unambiguous S and an unambiguous J on the same leaf. The image was downloaded at full resolution and the test run. It did not need the rest of the leaf.
linethe words
1«in domo D. Sabastiani Sablich»
3«et D. Catharinam Sablich»
4«Parochus Buccarensis Jacobus Polian»
5«et D. Josepho Smich»
The scribe's J, three lines below, rises high and drops a long descender below the baseline, hooking left. The initial of «Sablich» rises, returns to the baseline, and has no descender at all. ✔ And the clincher is inside the name. Her father is «Sabastiani Sablich» — and the two words begin with the identical letterform. Whatever opens «Sabastiani» can only be an S. Settled from the entry's own letters, not by staring. (doc — FamilySearch, «Croatia, Delnice Deanery Catholic Church Books, 1571–1926»: Bakar, Religious Marriage Registers 1739–1808, film 005494714, image 172, page 161; custodian Hrvatski državni arhiv u Zagrebu. Image downloaded 9 October 2026 at 5975×4206 and read locally.) ⚠ This does not make the Gologorica entry a misreading. That register writes her «nata JABLICH ex Buccari», and probably wrote exactly that. The discrepancy is between two scribes a hundred and thirty kilometres apart — an Istrian priest setting down a Kvarner name he had heard spoken. Her family's name is Sablich; what Gologorica called her is Jablich. ⚠ Her row is renamed to «née Sablich (Jablich)» and her person id stays frozen at the Jablich form — a moved id is a dead URL, and the Gologorica spelling is how this archive first met her. --- ✔ 10 October — her motherhood of the eleven-day-old Catharina is now doc. > «36 · Die 12 Martij obijt in Domino CATHARINA filia JOANNIS BAPTÆ DE FRANCESCHI ejusque uxoris CATHARINÆ, ætatis suæ DIERUM 12, cujus corpus sepultus est in novo Cœmeterio extra locum per R. D. Joannem Konicich» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068993, «Liber Mortuorum II», female sequence, under the year heading 1786.)* That child's row has said since it was made that her parents were inferred from the index and the house. A second, parallel death register names them both: «filia Joannis Baptæ de Franceschi ejusque uxoris Catharinæ». --- ✔✔ 11 October — the Istrian spelling is now proved too, and the two readings are symmetrical. > 3 October 1786 · «Patrini fuerunt Joannes Bapta Defranceschi MARITUS THERESIÆ, et Cattarina nata JABLICH uxor Joannis Baptistæ FILIJ JOSEPHI Defranceschi, ambo ex hac Parochia.» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068950, «Liber Baptizatorum II».)* The Bakar register's «Sablich» was proved from inside its own entry — the scribe opens «Sabastiani» with the identical letter, and Sebastian can only begin with an S. The same test now runs on the Gologorica side: the J of «Jablich» drops a long descender and hooks left, exactly like «Joannis» two words later and «Josephi» on the line below — same hand, fifteen letters apart. > Bakar writes SABLICH and proves its S. Gologorica writes JABLICH and proves its J. So the careful reading published two days ago stands and is now symmetrical: two scribes a hundred and thirty kilometres apart, neither misreading — an Istrian priest setting down a Kvarner name he had heard spoken, and a Kvarner priest writing his own parishioner's. Her row keeps both forms. ⭐ And the same sentence makes her husband's parentage doc again: «uxor Joannis Baptistæ filij Josephi Defranceschi». --- ⭐⭐⭐ 11 October 2026 — three years earlier, and the register says BUCCARENSIS. > 16 Decembris 1783 · «Patrini fuere Dominus Josephus Defranceschi, et Domina CATHARINA DEFRANCESCHI nata SABLICH BUCCARENSIS» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068943, «Liber Baptizatorum II», in the hand of the chaplain Joannes Florcich.) Her earliest appearance was 3 October 1786. This is 16 December 1783, she is «Domina», and her origin is a single Latin adjective — «Buccarensis» — rather than the «ex Buccari» of 1786. ✔ And a third hand, tested against itself. Florcich writes his own J three times in the same paragraph — «Ego Joannes Florcich», «Joanne Baptista», «Joannes Eusebius» — and every one drops a long descender below the baseline. The surname's initial has none. This scribe writes «Sablich». ⚠ It does not overturn the 1786 «Jablich», which was proved the same way against its own scribe's J. Both spellings are native to this parish, in different hands, three years apart — which is why this row carries both names.

No family is drawn for this name, and no record stands behind it. This archive has not placed it in a household and holds no indexed entry for it — the name reached this project through a chart, a narrative source or the family tree, and everything it does hold is below. The Register is where a record would appear if one turned up.
Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
