What the archive knows

Born 25 December 1777, baptised 2 January 1778 — the fourth documented child of Antonio de Franceschi, witness 1773 and Mattea. > «Dom[ini]cus filius leg[iti]mus Antonij Defranceschi, Matthiae ejus uxoris, natus die 25 elapsi mensis [Xbris]. Baptizatus per eundem R.dum D.num Petrum Can.um Fabris…» — baptisms 1764–1791, frame 70. Magnified and read letter by letter. (doc.) He must never be merged with the adult Domenico of the same parish. A grown «Dominicus Defranceschi» stands godfather in 1775 and witnesses marriages in 1777 — before and around this child's birth — and by 1782 has a wife, Fosca. This Domenico is five years old in 1782. Two men of the name are alive at the castle at once. See Domenico Defranceschi, witness 1777. His sisters and brother: Franca de Franceschi (b. 1769), Domenica de Franceschi (b. 1776), Maria de Franceschi, daughter of Antonio and Vittorio de Franceschi, son of Antonio.

No family is drawn for this name. The archive holds 5 households under it, and none of their dates do not fit this person: Antonio De Franceschi × Maria Bergamo (1841) · Pietro De Franceschi q.m Gio: Maria × Veniera Francin (1803) · Pietro De Franceschi × Martina Civico (1786) · Antonio de Franceschi × Mattea (1777) · Antonio Defranceschi (1841). A shared forename is not a family.
The same name, written another way

This archive holds 6 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…apart. A real defect underneath, now fixed. Four life rows had a page section slug in the place field — early-fiume, carnia-fiume, pazin-fiume — so their dossiers read «Place: early-fiume». They are Valentino Defranceschi, Domenico de Franceschi, Giovanni Battista Defranceschi and Zuane De Franceschi, and they do not all resolve the same way: the first three belong at Rijeka, but Zuane is of Mione in Carnia and only appears in the Fiume page's Carnian section. Set accordingly,…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
