What the archive knows

«Die 4 8bris 1739 … baptizavit unam infantulam natam die 1ma currentis a Batta Defranceschi et Jacoba ejus legitima uxore ambobus ex hac Parochia, cui positum fuit nomen Euphemia» — born 1 October, baptised 4 October 1739. Godparents D.nus Aloysius Spinotti and Ursula, wife of Francesco Marzoni. Batta is Battista, so her father is a Giovanni Battista Defranceschi — and the same register has one standing godfather five months earlier, on 19 April 1739. This is very probably Joannes Baptista de Franceschi of Svetvincenat (fl. 1739)'s household. (inf for the identification; doc for the baptism.) And she raises a question the archive cannot answer. Fourteen months before her, on 27 July 1738, «Petro de Franceschi et Jacoba ejus legitima uxore» baptise a daughter Anna Euphemia. Same mother's name, same daughter's name, two different fathers' forenames. And the balance has since shifted against Batta. On 29 December 1739, eleven weeks after this baptism, the same register enters a godmother as «Jacoba uxor Petri Defranceschi» — and Jacoba was already Pietro's wife in July 1738. So the register names Jacoba as Pietro's wife twice, on either side of the one entry that gives her to a Batta. The likeliest reading is now that this child belongs to Pietro and Jacoba and that the clerk wrote the wrong husband here — which would make her the second Euphemia of that household, the first having died. The entry still reads Batta under magnification and has not been altered; what has changed is which way the evidence leans. (The identification with Joannes Baptista de Franceschi of Svetvincenat (fl. 1739) is accordingly withdrawn to lore.) The same name, written another way

This archive holds 1 other page under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Euphemia di Pietro Defranceschi (1749)

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

This person has not been written up in an essay yet — most often read straight off a register page that no index anywhere contains. What is known is at the top, and the pages linked above are where the finding sits.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
