What the archive knows

«Die 17 7bris, 1749. Euphemia filia Petri Defranceschi, et Jacoba ejus legitima uxoris, amborum ex hac Parochia, nata hodie, baptizata fuit a R.do D.no Antonio Stancovich Canc.; Patrini ad Sacrum Fontem fuere Gregorius Jurcich, et Faustino filio q.m Joannis Baptistæ Defranceschi.» — born and baptised the same day, 17 September 1749. Magnified. Fifth child of Pietro de Franceschi of Svetvincenat and Jacoba, and eleven years after their first. ⚠ She is the third Euphemia this household has baptised. Anna Euphemia in 1738, Euphemia in 1739, and Euphemia again here. A parish does not give one living daughter's name to two of her sisters. The likeliest reading is that the first two died small and the name was tried a third time — the same pattern as Pascasia's two Antonias in 1746 and 1747. The burial register for these years has not been read, and until it is this is inference from naming and nothing else. (doc for the baptism; inf for the deaths.) Baptised the day she was born, which in this register usually means the child was not expected to live. The same name, written another way

This archive holds 1 other page under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Euphemia di Batta Defranceschi (1739)

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

This person has not been written up in an essay yet — most often read straight off a register page that no index anywhere contains. What is known is at the top, and the pages linked above are where the finding sits.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
