What the archive knows

Born 8 December 1769, baptised on the 9th — and hers is the record that finally puts Antonio de Franceschi in this parish as a householder rather than a witness. > «9 Xbre 1769. Fran.ca figlia di D.no Ant.o De Franceschi e Donna Mattia … nata li 8 corrente … Battezata … dal D. Ant.o Can.co Stancovich de L.P.» — baptisms 1764–1791, waypoint 31, carta 26. The father's name and the date were magnified and read letter by letter. Her father is styled D.no — Dominus, Signor — which this register does not hand out freely. (doc.) Her mother is the woman named again eleven years later: the entry of 1 May 1780 has «Matthea uxor Antonij Defranceschi» standing godmother. (doc for both; that they are one household is inf.) She is Vittorio de Franceschi, son of Antonio's sister — eleven years younger, on the strength of their sharing a father's name, a parish and a decade. (inf.) The FamilySearch index records her independently, as «Franca De Franceschi, 8 Dec 1769, parents Ano De Franceschi & Mattia».

The same name, written another way

This archive holds 2 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Franca De Franceschi · Francisca Defranceschi

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
