What the archive knows

⭐⭐ A little girl of four and a half, the daughter of the navy servant Johann Defranceschi, dead at Pola in 1882. On 4 August 1882, at Pola, «Francisca Antonia Defranceschi, ehel. Tochter des Johann Defranceschi, k.k. Marine-Dieners», born at Pola in Istria, Catholic, aged 4½, female, single, died of «Diphteritis» [diphtheria] (the cause is written two words long; the second is «Diphteritis laut Leichenschau-Zettel», 5 August 1882), and was buried on 5 August 1882 on the naval cemetery; the remarks column says she «wurde sterbend ins Spital überbracht» [was carried dying to the hospital] (Pola k.u.k. naval hospital («Marine-Spital») «Sterb-Register» 1874–1891, image 77; doc; the regiment column carries the father's rank, «Marine-Diener II Cl.»). Baptism: born at Pola on 24 January 1878, baptised there on 17 September 1878 — «Francisca Antonia», daughter of «Defranceschi Johann, k.k. Marinediener 2. Cl., aus Galignana in Istrien» and «Paula Petra, ehel. Tochter des Peter Rocco, … aus Pola in Istrien»; godparents Nicolo Fabianić [reading uncertain], a merchant, and Giuseppa Piazza; baptised by Johann Germek, Marine-Curat; the remark column names the midwife (Pola k.u.k. naval parish baptism book 1876–1884, image 63; doc). Her parents are therefore doc, not inf: this is Johann of Galignana and Paula Pietra of h132, the mother's surname written «Petra» here and «Pietra» in the marriage entry of 1871. Born 24 January 1878 (baptism, doc); the age at death, 4½, agrees.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
