Gregorio Defranceschi (named 1827, Pomer)
Gregorio Defranceschi (named 1827, Pomer). Pomer, Istra. Every mention of this name in the archive — 15 across 12 pages.
The father of a woman who stood godmother at Pomer on 22 July 1827 — a marginal line under the baptism of «Madalena», daughter of Martin Sumber(?) and Agata nata Sicco (house 22), names the godparents as «Antº Vejali e sua […]ganita figlia di Greg.º Defranceschi». doc — the line is written below the ruled page, in a different ink, to say who the godmother was; the surname was magnified and reads «Defranceschi» (the forename is read «Greg.º», abbreviated, with less confidence; his daughter's own forename is read only as «…ganita»). A man of the name at Pomer with a married daughter by 1827 — so himself born by about 1780, a generation before Tomas (b. c. 1800). Nothing says whether he is Michele's brother, a cousin, or no relation, and no join to Tomas's household is claimed; nor is he joined to the «Gregorio Defranceschi (witness 1780)» of Svetvinčenat, a different parish. Source: DGS 005497826 (Pomer births 1816–1834, 1842–1900; FamilySearch waypoint 9R2F-FMH), frame 628 (births frame 7), register page 5, bottom margin; burned-in number 627.
This archive holds 5 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

His daughter Justina married Josephus Fedel on 22 Nov 1898 and a Stana married Jacobus Vojnić on 7 Aug 1899 —…

So the blot reading is withdrawn. The name Gregorio Defranceschi on frame 86 stands — that part is legible. What he was called after it does not, and this archive no longer says that Antonio was dead in 1780, nor that Gregorio's father was. What went wrong. …indexer has repeatedly merged the two surnames into «Gregorii Skifić» and «Agathæ Skifić», which is how a machine reads a Latin entry giving a father, a mother and her maiden name in one line. There is already a «Gregorio Defranceschi, 1822, Ližnjan» on the books; ⚠ Grga is the Croatian form of Gregorius, so the two share a NAME — and a man dying in 1931 is not one born in 1822. A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
