What the archive knows

Madalena (Mandalena, Maddalena) née Percovich — wife of Mattio Defranceschi di Antonio, mother of Antonio (1819), Maria (1821) and Gregorio (1822), at Ližnjan house 17. doc — baptisms of 1819 and 1821 (image 6 of waypoint 9R2Z-44D, open); the Percovich are godparents to both (Luca Percovich fu Luca and Maria his wife). Her own birth and death are not found with certainty. Not of the name's surname; kept because she married into it. Born about 1788 — 27 at her marriage to «Mario de Franceschi deto Marulin di Antonio» (21) on 12 November 1815 (Ližnjan marriages, page 1, entry 2; read by the 12 October session, doc). Named «Maddalena Perkovich» as the mother in the marriages of her daughters Maria (23 February 1848) and Madalena (23 July 1849) (page 15, image 11 of waypoint 9R2Z-44C); the parents column does not mark a mother's death. Probably buried 6 January 1849, aged 61 — «Maddalena fu Matteo Defranceschi», house 17 (deaths page 27, image 18 of waypoint 9R2Z-4WG): inf, and the age is the proof — 61 in 1849 is 1788 exactly, as 27 in 1815 is — with the house and the «fu Matteo» (the relict of the Matteo who died on 20 December 1839). The alternative, a daughter of some other Matteo born in the same year at the same house, needs a coincidence. I first withdrew this reading on the births book's use of «fu X» for a woman's father and restore it on the age. Joined to the index row of that burial.

Two children here carry one name — m a r i a. In these parishes that is usually not an error: a child who died was very often replaced by a later child given the same name. It is also exactly how an index invents one person out of two, so both are drawn.

The same name, written another way

This archive holds 1 other page under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Maddalena Defranceschi

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…was likelier a daughter of a late Matteo — and said Mattio's own death was «not found». Both were wrong in the same way: I had not checked what the archive already held. Mattio died on 20 December 1839 (deaths page 93, read on 12 October), and his wife Madalena Percovich was 27 in 1815 — so born about 1788, and 61 in 1849 is exactly that. The widow reading is back, as inf, on the age. The FamilySearch index row for her (XQM3-1DS4) is right on the year and wrong on the month («Jun 1849» for 6 January 1849, probably from…

So the Antonio of the 1843 marriage was born in 1819 (the marriage says «23»; the baptism puts him a year older), and his father is Mattio — and Mattio is himself «di Antonio». Mattio's wife is Madalena Percovich; the same couple, at the same house, have Maria, born 6 January 1821 (page 5, image 6), and Gregorio, baptised 23 May 1822 — read on the page (image 7, page 6): «Gregorio, figlio di Mattio di Franceschi, detto Matulin, di Antonio», mother «Madalena…

…fu Matteo Defranceschi», aged 61, buried at house 17 on 6 January 1849 (deaths page 27, image 18 of waypoint 9R2Z-4WG, open) is, after all, probably Mattio's widow Madalena Percovich (inf): the marriage of 12 November 1815 (page 1 of the marriages) has her at 27, born about 1788, and 61 in 1849 is 1788 exactly — as the house is — and Mattio had died on 20 December 1839 (deaths page 93, read on 12 October). A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
