What the archive knows

He is the ŽUPAN of Gologorica — the headman the absentee lord governed the village through — and until this morning the archive had him only as a title attached to somebody else's death entry. > 26 Aprilis 1764 · «patrini fuere D.ⁿᵘˢ Matheus Flegar, et Domina Supana Joanna vidua defuncti D.ⁿⁱ Supani JOANNIS BAPTISTÆ DEFRANCESCHI» (doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, M01068918, the first text page of «Liber Baptizatorum II», in the hand of Marcus Bancich.) ⭐ His own parish writes his forename pair. His widow's burial in 1774 calls him only «Supani Joannis Defranceschi», and this archive's note on her row says in as many words that the full form had to be carried in from the Gračišće registers. It no longer does. ⭐ And he was dead by 26 April 1764 — the burial of his widow gives no date for him at all. This is the only terminus the archive has for him.

death⚠ not found. Before 26 April 1764, and the obit calendar has been swept without him.
⚠⚠ THREE MEN OF THIS NAME, AND NO ROW IS MERGED. One was dead by August 1709, with a wife Lucia and a daughter Vittoria — not this man: Lucia was still «moglie di q. Gio: Batta» in 1720, and a man does not leave two widows who each outlive him by decades. A third is carried as «the elder, died 1767» on a tree and nothing else. ⚠ A man dead in 1767 cannot be «defuncti» in April 1764 — but a tree year is an interval, not a point, so the collision is recorded and left open rather than decided. ⚠ No parentage, no children attached. The Zagreb librarians' account makes the župan's son Gian Pietro the Belgian lord's tax-collector, and the arithmetic of that join is already flagged on his wife's row. Nothing is hung on it here. --- ⭐⭐ Within the hour, two more constructions. The forename pair is not one reading.

(doc — DAPA ZM34K-214, all three in the hand of Marcus Bancich; told in full here.) ⭐ And the office did not stay in the house. On 16 December 1764, eight months after he is first entered «defuncti», the register christens a daughter of «Supani Martini et Mariæ jugalium Udovcich Gospood» — and Josephus Defranceschi stands as her godfather. ⚠ What the register shows is a title held by another man at that date, not a succession list. ✔ A fourth construction, 5 February 1770. > «patrini fuerunt Simon Bugich ex territorio Boruti, et Joanna vidua defuncti Joannis Baptistæ Defranceschi, hujas» (M01068926) The forename pair now stands on four entries — 1764, 1765, 1767, 1770 — and his widow is a godmother in all four, at about eighty-six in the last.

No family is drawn for this name, and no record stands behind it. This archive has not placed it in a household and holds no indexed entry for it — the name reached this project through a chart, a narrative source or the family tree, and everything it does hold is below. The Register is where a record would appear if one turned up.
Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

This person has not been written up in an essay yet — most often read straight off a register page that no index anywhere contains. What is known is at the top, and the pages linked above are where the finding sits.

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
