What the archive knows

His mother and six siblings are named at last. «The Canberra Times», 25 September 1982: the death at Pederobba, Treviso of Cesira De Franceschi, «dearly beloved mother of Cesare, Canberra, Giosue Giacomo and Dino, Broken Hill, Alfonso, Mario and Imelda, Italy». This archive had him as a name on a stone in Broken Hill Cemetery and nothing else. He is a son of a Pederobba household, one of three brothers who went to Broken Hill, and Pederobba is a place already pinned on this site's own emigration map with nobody on it. (inf for the identification — the notice names a Giacomo at Broken Hill in 1982 and the cemetery holds a Giacomo who died there in 2012; no document yet joins the two.) Broken Hill Cemetery

⚠ The record behind this row is a different person entirely. 1:1:QJDZ-K8ZX is Germano Defranceschi, baptised 15 September 1909 at Santo Stefano Protomartire, Cloz, Trento — not Giacomo, not 2012, and not Broken Hill. The death year was copied from this archive's own graves data on a name match. Held pending a decision on whether the row should exist.

No family is drawn for this name. The archive holds 5 households under it, and none of their dates do not fit this person: Gasparo De Franceschi × Antonia (1706) · Giacomo de Franceschi × Pascasia (1743–1759) · Giacomo de Franceschi × Anzola (1737–1737) · Giacomo de Franceschi × Nicolina Teserati (1773–1778) · Giacomo de Franceschi (husband of Francisca Marcario) × Francisca Marcario (1743–1753). A shared forename is not a family.
The same name, written another way

This archive holds 5 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

Giacomo De Franceschi · Giacomo de Franceschi (d. bef. 1771) · Giacomo de Franceschi (m. 1772) · Jacobus Defranceschi · Jacobus de Franceschi

Identity here is by name, not by resolved individual. Where two people of one name appear in this archive they share this page, and it is for the reader to keep them apart — the surrounding text usually makes it obvious. Nothing here is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.

…Two things this archive already held, and never joined. Pederobba, in Treviso, is a pin on David's own emigration map — one of the Veneto places marked «High Level of Emigration from Here» — and it had no person attached to it. And Giacomo Defranceschi was a name on a stone in Broken Hill Cemetery with no origin, no parents and no siblings. One death notice supplies both: the Broken Hill Defranceschi are a Pederobba household, and three brothers of them went to…

A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
