- Joannes Baptista de Franceschi (of Svetvinčenat, d. by 1737) — about 1680, Svetvinčenat
Known only from his daughter, and from the word defuncti. On 7 October 1737 a godmother is entered as «Maria filia defuncti Joannis Baptistæ de Franceschi» — so a Giovanni Battista of the name was a householder at Svetvinčenat and was dead by the autumn of 1737. The daughter is probably already on this roster. Maria di Batta Defranceschi, born 1716, was read off a page of this same parish — Batta is Battista — and a woman of twenty-one is exactly who stands godmother in 1737. (inf, on the forename of the father and the parish; nothing else joins them yet.) A man with a grown daughter in 1737 was born about 1680, give or take fifteen years. (inf for the estimate; doc for the death bracket and the daughter.) Film 005497885, images 115–117 — Births 1709–1764 of Svetvinčenat, read on the plate 22 September 2026. --- 22 September, later — and there are two of him. On 19 April 1739 a godfather is entered as «Joannes Baptista de Franceschi, et Clara vidua defuncti Bartholomei Braccato» — alive, standing at the font, eighteen months after the other one was called defuncti. Father and son is the ordinary explanation and this archive does not claim more than that. What it does mean is plain: at Svetvinčenat in the 1730s the forename Joannes Baptista does not identify a man of this surname, any more than Jacobo does. (doc for both appearances; the relation between them is unestablished.)
This archive holds 11 other pages under what Say Your Name reconciles as the same given name in another language — a Latin register, a Venetian clerk, a Croatian village, a Hungarian office. They are not merged and none of them is claimed to be this person: a shared name is not a shared identity, and the archive will not join one to the other by machine. It is here so that a reader looking for a man the records called Josephus can see where they wrote him Josip.

The Lines
…yet. The largest concentration of the name this archive holds outside Vodnjan, and it was hidden in plain sight. The Pazin-county stock is the one the drawing joins to Carnia with a dotted line: Kobler's Giovanni Battista «venuto da Pisino», and a Joannes Baptista de Franceschi baptising at Fiume in 1748 whose son heads the Rijeka chain. Fiume 1626
…For twenty years this archive read Fiume as one Defranceschi house — Valentino the Carnian's. On 20 September 2026 a frame-by-frame sweep of the baptism film turned up another, baptising in the same church in the same decade: D.nus Joannes Baptista de Franceschi and D.na Magdalena. They matter more than a second household usually would, because their son is almost certainly the Giuseppe who heads the Rijeka chain — the line that runs on through a Valentino born 1772, twenty-one children on Ursula between 1794…
…confirms Kobler and hangs the Rijeka chain off this archive's own line. Anything else kills it. And it will be found in the County of Pazin's registers, which run from 1582 and have never been opened here — not at Fiume. D.nus Joannes Baptista de Franceschi head of the household; married twice, a widower by December 1771 joannes-baptista-de-franceschi D.na Magdalena his first wife; named only in her son's baptism, dead before December 1771. Her maiden name is the open question of this…

…«ex Cargn.» / «ex Cargnia» / «ex Cargno» — Carnia, the mountain corner of Friuli — is the only origin the Svetvinčenat register ever gives anyone of this surname. For a day this archive read that as a fact about one man: Joannes Baptista de Franceschi, an incomer. Reading forward four more frames turned it into a fact about the parish. Between 1742 and 1745 the same clerk writes «ex Cargno» against seventeen different people: Joannes Baptista Defranceschi (1742, 1743, 1744), Antonij…

…inside that book and a marriage entry names the fathers. 22 September, later — images 115, 116 and 117 read (October 1737 – May 1738), and the name is on all three. Twins to Jacobo de Franceschi and Anzola on 26 December 1737, in no index; a Joannes Baptista de Franceschi dead by that autumn, known from his daughter's entry; Jacobo godfather three times and Maria godmother three times inside eight months. Four frames of about forty-five are read and every one has carried the name, so the remaining forty are a read…
…where it stood — Magdalena's maiden name, in the County of Pazin's own books at the Državni arhiv u Pazinu. An errand, not a read. --- 22 September — a name in the right decade, and nothing more. The Svetvinčenat sweep has turned up a Joannes Baptista de Franceschi alive there on 19 April 1739, and a second of that name dead before October 1737. This is not a lead yet and is not recorded as one. Fiume's Joannes Baptista fathers a child in 1748 and his origin is unknown; Svetvinčenat is sixty kilometres…

…form of Carnia. This is the phrase this item has been circling. Fiume's marriage register puts «ex Carnia» on Valentino in 1737; Fiume's Joannes Baptista fathers a child in 1748 and his origin has never been found. Here is a Joannes Baptista de Franceschi from Carnia, in Istria, in 1742. It is not evidence that they are the same man and this item does not treat it as such — the register gives no age, no wife, no destination, and this family reuses forenames freely enough that a match on one proves…
A dossier is every mention of a name anywhere in this archive's data, gathered automatically and linked back to the page it appears on, with what the archive knows about the person set out at the top. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual: where two people share a name they share a dossier, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Rebuilt from the roster, so every person the archive can name has a page — including the ones read straight off a register that no index anywhere contains.
